As an adult, you are probably familiar with silver fillings, and you may even have some. Those amalgam fillings were once the go-to solution for repairing cavities but are now a thing of the past. Advancements in dentistry have brought us composite fillings, which we offer at Integrative Dental Arts.

What are composite fillings?

Composite fillings are made of a plastic and glass mixture that is used to repair tooth decay (cavities). The mixture is permanently bonded to the tooth and hardened, blending in naturally since it is tooth-colored.

What is the difference between amalgam and composite?

The color is the most noticeable difference between these two materials since amalgam is silver, and composite is tooth-colored. Composite fillings are esthetic since they are color matched for each particular tooth, unlike silver fillings that are highly noticeable.

Composite is much safer for your child since it is non-toxic, unlike amalgam fillings, which contain mercury. Research indicates that amalgam fillings continuously leach mercury vapor, which enters the bloodstream. Studies have linked mercury to cognitive and neurological disorders, among many other health concerns.

Composite fillings are also a healthier option for teeth because they expand and contract at the same rate when subjected to temperature changes in the mouth. On the other hand, amalgam does not respond to temperature changes in the same manner, in fact, it changes at a greater rate. In other words, a tooth with an amalgam filling is likely to fracture and break.

What should my child expect when getting a composite filling?

If your child experiences apprehension towards going to the dentist, sedation dentistry may be an option. The procedure will begin by making sure the tooth is completely numb, and then decay is removed. A special bonding solution is brushed on the clean, dry tooth, and then the composite material is permanently bonded to the tooth. The dentist will ensure the filling is made smooth. The best part is that your child’s new filling will blend in with the rest of their smile.
