Tooth-Colored Children’s Crowns

When a tooth is severely decayed or broken, sometimes a filling is not enough to repair the damage. In these instances, a crown may be the most viable solution.

My child has a cavity, why can’t a filling fix the problem?

To repair a cavity, the damaged area of the tooth must be completely removed. There must be enough healthy tooth structure remaining for a filling to properly bond. If not, the filling will likely break, become loose, or cause further damage to the little bit of tooth that is left. In this case, a dental crown may be the most viable option to save the tooth.

What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns, often referred to as a “cap,” essentially fit over the entire tooth to add strength and stability, and save it from extraction. At Integrative Dental Arts, we offer tooth-colored dental crowns for children, which means they blend in with the child’s other natural teeth. These crowns are prefabricated and made of Zirconia, a high-end biocompatible material that is not only durable but also esthetic and will not stain.

How do I know if my child needs a dental crown?

Sometimes, the need for a dental crown is evident such as an apparent fracture or broken tooth. On the other hand, you may be unaware that you child is suffering from extensive tooth decay. Only the dentist will be able to determine if your child needs a dental crown.

How should I prepare my child for a dental crown procedure?

Each case is different, but your child should first know that their comfort and safety is our top priority. We offer sedation dentistry to help ease your child’s anxiety about the procedure. During your child’s consultation, we can discuss the specifics of their treatment.
