The Hidden Dangers of an Untreated Tongue Tie

hidden dangers of tongue tieThousand Oaks, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills, CA

There is a school of thought that a tongue-tie will go away on its own. This can be a dangerous choice to ignore a tongue-tie, even if your previous dentist or physician said everything would be just fine, because it won’t. If left untreated, a tongue-tie can have a significant impact on your oral health, as well as your overall health. These issues can linger into adulthood and eventually require more extensive and costly treatments.

Let’s examine the potential consequences of an untreated tongue-tie.

For infants, a tongue-tie has the most significant impact on successful breastfeeding. The effects of a tongue-tie in infants can impact the milk supply, cause failure to thrive, diminished bonding between baby and mother, lead to issues introducing solid foods or cause termination of breastfeeding altogether. For mothers with breastfeeding, a baby with a tongue-tie can make nursing painful, cause nipple damage, or depression or a sense of failure. If ignored, the baby’s tongue-tie will begin causing problems as the child develops. Issues with chewing properly, speech, and growth of the jaw will be compromised.

Children with a tongue-tie can experience a variety of problems, primarily related to eating and speech. They can have difficulty chewing age-appropriate solid foods, or problems swallowing. A tongue-tie also may cause delayed development of speech, deterioration in speech, or a lack of self-confidence because of speech issues. Dental hygiene difficulties or the manifestation of dental problems also may occur. Ignoring issues at this stage may result in more costly treatments that are also more invasive.

Adolescence and Beyond

The impact of a tongue-tie worsens with age and can create significant issues for adults who have lived with one for their entire life. Many of the problems in adults manifest from poor habits that developed to compensate for poor tongue mobility. Specific issues include problems with speech and eating habits, a clicking sound or pain in the jaw, migraine headaches or protrusion of the lower jaw. Self-confidence and self-esteem are affected because of the impact that a tongue-tie has on speech and eating, affecting a person at work and in social situations. For the elderly, a tongue-tie makes it more difficult to keep a denture in place.
