Questions about All on 4

Even if you have lost all the teeth in your mouth, you can restore your smile by letting your Agoura Hills implant dentist Dr. Kathleen Carson install the All on 4 implant system to replace all of your missing teeth, and restore your smile in a single day!

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about this procedure:

What is All on 4?

All on 4 is, in essence, a combination of a single unit of replacement teeth, and dental implants. Rather than receive an implant to replace each missing tooth, however, an All on 4 procedure involves only four implants that are strategically placed in the jawbone. These implants provide support for a single unit of replacement teeth. Once put in place, this bridge-like unit is permanent; you can maintain it by brushing and flossing just like you would your natural teeth. Integrative Dental Arts also can match the shade of the replacement teeth to any existing teeth you may still have, such as on the opposing dental arch, allowing your new teeth to blend seamlessly into your mouth, and provide a natural look.

I am not a candidate for dental implants. Is All on 4 even an option?

Yes! Many people with tooth loss are disqualified from receiving a traditional dental implant due to insufficient supporting bone structure. In fact, 4 out of every 5 patients who are not able to get dental implants due to bone loss still are eligible for the All on 4 system. This is made possible because the placement of the implants to anchor the All on 4 replacement teeth usually just entails using the frontal portion of the jawbone, which is denser, thus eliminating the need for a bone graft or sinus lift.

How do I know if All on 4 is right for me?

Generally speaking, All on 4 implants only are recommended for patients who have lost at least an entire dental arch of teeth or who are about to lose all their teeth on a dental arch because their teeth have been diagnosed as being “hopeless” or severely compromised. If you are a current denture wearer and are unhappy with how your dentures fit, the All on 4 system may be a good choice for you as well.

How does All on 4 differ from standard dental implants?

If you receive a traditional dental implant, you can expect a healing time of six months or longer after the implant screw is placed in the jawbone, before the procedure can be completed by topping your implant with a crown. Receiving the All on 4 has no downtime and you immediately will have a full set of teeth. This is made possible because of the greater density of the frontal jawbone, and the angle at which the implants are placed. Also, shorter implants are used for the All on 4 procedure.

How long does the All on 4 procedure take?

Each patient has their own specific set of needs, but the average All on 4 system installation takes approximately 2 ½ hours per dental arch or about 5 hours for the full mouth. We are sure to have your new replacement teeth installed within a day!

Will it hurt?

The installation of the implants is performed under anesthetic. Integrative Dental Arts also can provide sedation, should you feel apprehensive or anxious about your upcoming procedure. You also will begin a course of anti-inflammatory medication prior to the procedure, which will help minimize swelling and discomfort after your replacement teeth have been installed. We will also provide you with a post-operative instructions sheet to help make your recovery a smooth one. During your consultation we can discuss in more detail what you should expect during and after your procedure, as well as what you may need to have on hand at home to help during your recovery period. For example, you may want to stick to a diet of soft foods for a few days following your procedure.

How much does All on 4 cost?

We determine the price of each treatment performed at Integrative Dental Arts on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the specific needs of each individual patient as well as any pre-existing conditions that may alter the treatment plan. However, in general, the average cost of the All on 4 installation procedure is about half that of conventional methods of tooth replacement. Also, considering that the All on 4 system is designed to last a lifetime, you should not have to replace the unit like you would dentures. Typically, dentures have to be remade after so many years, or at least once a decade, due to the jawbone changing shape.
