4 Risks of Mail-Order Orthodontics

Mail-order orthodontics has become quite popular. While the idea of being able to achieve straight teeth without ever having to step foot in a dentist’s office may sound appealing to some, especially if you get anxiety at just the thought of going to the dentist, this orthodontic approach comes with risks. Cosmetic dentists in Agoura Hills at Integrative Dental Arts want to share with you four risks of mail-order orthodontics. So, whether you are interested in mail-order orthodontics or want to learn more about how Invisalign works, then we’ve got some helpful information for you.

How does mail-order orthodontics work?

In short, mail-order orthodontics works by sending you all of the materials that you need to take impressions of your teeth. You then send those impressions back to the company, and they will make your clear aligners and ship them to you. You will be sent instructions on how to wear your aligners, when to change them, and such. While a dentist reviews your case, he or she never actually meets with you face to face and isn’t able to monitor your progress in the same manner as visiting with a dentist locally that is trained in orthodontics.

The risks of mail-order orthodontics

  1. Your teeth could fall out

This is not an exaggeration, it could happen. When moving teeth using orthodontics, we use a slow, gentle pressure to move them, the ligaments, and remodel the jawbone to accommodate the new position of the teeth. However, if this process happens too quickly, it could cause irreversible damage to your teeth and surrounding soft tissue, which could result in permanent tooth loss.

  1. Your insurance probably won’t cover it

Many insurance plans offer orthodontic coverage, but only if the treatment is done under the supervision of a licensed dental professional. In many cases, mail-order orthodontic systems are not covered under dental insurance plans. This could mean that you end up spending more for something that already comes with too many risks.

  1. It can cost more money in the long run

If something with your mail-order treatment goes wrong, it could end up costing you more money in the long run for dental repairs and traditional orthodontics. Plus, if you end up needing additional dental work, for example, dental implants to replace severely damaged teeth, then that is another hefty bill to add to the bill.

  1. You could end up with bite problems or worse

Some reports conclude that patients who used mail-order orthodontics ended up with teeth that were worse off than what they began with. For instance, some users ended up with molars that did not occlude at all, which means their back teeth don’t touch when they bite or chew. This can be a big problem because it means the entire biting force is placed on the front teeth, which aren’t designed for heavy-duty chewing like the molars. Also, an uneven bite such as this could result in jaw joint pain or TMJ disorder, which results in a whole host of other health problems, including chronic pain.
