An herbal approach to medicine has been used for centuries to cure diseases and ailments of all kinds. Using herbs to cure diseases is known as Chinese Medicine, and it was even used here in American until about the 1950s, which was when modern pharmaceuticals entered the healthcare scene. Although modern medicine cannot be prescribed or used until it undergoes testing and approval by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), many drugs come with undesirable side effects, forcing people to take additional medication to curb those effects. In some cases, side effects may even be worse than what you are treating in the first place. Modern medicine has even caused drug dependency and addiction, something that has become an epidemic in our Western society.
The field of dentistry is not exempt from modern medicine. Pain medications are often prescribed to patients for pain management who undergo extensive dental treatments, or sleeping pills to induce sleep so that people can rest. Dr. Kathleen Carson is a holistic dentist in Agoura Hills, and she is proud to offer natural alternatives to modern medicine. Dr. Carson has partnered with Herbalist Diane Weiss, L.Ac, Dipl. O.M. to offer combined benefits of Chinese herbal formulas and CBD oil, improving patient’s health, sleep quality, and pain management.
Together, they have created Chinese herb/CBD supplements, named Dental Qi. Dental Qi has formulations for improving sleep (Dream Qi), reducing pain and inflammation (Pain Qi), and improving overall health (Health Qi). This could be life changing for many patients that end up at our practice. Many of them are looking for alternatives to modern medicine – they want to feel better, sleep better, and live without pain without having to rely on modern medicine. Our special blend of Chinese herbs and CBD (cannabidiol) supplements can help patients live the life they always wanted, all without popping pills daily.
What CBD is not
CBD is not pot or weed. CBD or medicinal cannabis has gotten a bad rap in our culture because of its association with marijuana. However, there is a significant difference between the two. While marijuana contains CBD, it also has what is known as THC, which is what causes the infamous high or altering of sensory perception. CBD or cannabinoids is extracted from the cannabis plant, although it does not produce a psychoactive effect. Recently, CBD oil has been explored to discover its positive effect on the body’s endocannabinoid system.
What is the endocannabinoid system?
Our endocannabinoid system plays an important role in the nervous system. Our bodies actually produce a cannabis-like substance that has a lot to do with these three components:
- Nervous system receptors throughout the body that bond to endocannabinoids and cannabinoids
- Enzymes that help break down endocannabinoids and cannabinoids
The body’s endocannabinoid system or ECS function like gauges in a car. It helps regulate the body and maintain homeostasis. In other words, when things start to become unbalanced, your ECS kicks in. When you get hot and sweat, that’s your ECS kicking in. When your stomach growls signaling that you are hungry, that’s your ECS again.
The ECS helps regulate the following:
- Inflammation (including neuroinflammation)
- Digestion and appetite
- Motor control
- Temperature regulation
Maintaining homeostasis is essential to health and survival, and when your ECS is not working properly, it can cause a lot of health problems. This is where cannabinoid-based treatments come into play. They help kick your ECS in gear.
The ECS is a complex network of receptors found mostly in the brain and immune system. The receptors are responsible for functions such as regulating sleep, relaxation, and inflammatory responses.
The human body creates its own endocannabinoids to maintain a healthy body by getting enough sleep, combatting illness, and regulating pain. When the system becomes unbalanced or deficient, there can be a major impact on how we feel; we do not sleep well, we feel pain, or we fall ill.
Combining the benefits of traditional Chinese herbs while enhancing the ECS, our products can dramatically enhance treatment modalities for patients.
How Chinese herbs and CBD improve health
Research now shows that cannabidiol may be therapeutic in treating a variety of diseases, including:
- Mood and anxiety disorders
- Movement disorders (Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease)
- Pathological conditions
- Neuropathic pain
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Spinal cord injuries
- Stroke, hypertension, and Myocardial infarction
- Obesity/metabolic syndrome
Traditional Chinese herbal remedies have been shown to reduce stress levels, provide natural pain management, improve sleep, and strengthen immunity. Our products combine these benefits with the powerful benefits of CBD, working on the ECS to help patients live healthier lives, improve their quality of sleep, and reduce inflammation to relieve its side effects, including pain.
