What is OMD
Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder, OMD, involves problems with facial muscles related to tongue movement, the lips, teeth, and jaw. Problems can put pressure on the teeth, impacting tooth position, bite alignment, as well as impact facial development problems, speech, the temporomandibular joint, digestion, and more.
It can be something you are predisposed to due to existing conditions and it could develop over time due to medical problems, poor oral habits, orthodontic appliance use, and other issues. Children with speech problems are often sent for an OMD assessment. Early treatment results in the best outcome but children and adults alike can see great success from treatment.
OMD can involve tongue thrust, open mouth posture, problems with eating, speech problems, and dental abnormalities.
Symptoms of OMD / Myofunctional Disorder
A variety of contributing factors and symptoms can be an indication of OMD, including:
- Speech impediments, such as a lisp
- Feeding problems in infancy
- Sleep Apnea
- Ankyloglossia (being tongue tied)
Potential OMD Causes
Some people are born with OMD, others develop it. It can be caused from:
- Breathing through the mouth
- Bruxism (teeth grinding)
- Thumb sucking in infancy, extensive baby bottle or pacifier use
- Posture problems
- Bite deficiencies
- Developmental problems
- Problems in the nasal cavity
A myofunctional therapist can assess tongue movement and diagnose OMD and make treatment recommendations. Recommendations can include a variety of treatment options, including orthodontics as well as helping the patient re-train muscles for more optimal function and oral posture through exercises. It can impact the resting tongue position as well as swallowing. A customized approach is applied based on the individual patient. People with OMD, TMJ disorder, headaches, sleep apnea, tongue disorders, and speech problems may benefit from myofunctional therapy.
